What is Companionship Care?

Companionship care is about reducing isolation and loneliness through regular, meaningful social contact. It’s not about medical care or hands-on personal care – it’s about friendship, conversation, shared activities, and helping people stay connected to their communities and the things they enjoy.

Companionship care might include:

  • Conversation over tea or coffee
  • Playing cards, board games, or doing puzzles together
  • Going for walks or trips to local places
  • Accompanying you to appointments, social events, or visiting friends
  • Help with hobbies – gardening, crafts, reading together
  • Shopping trips or errands
  • Support using technology to stay in touch with family
  • Meal preparation and eating together
  • Light housework alongside companionship

Who is Companionship Care For?

Companionship care is for anyone who would benefit from regular social contact and support.

This might include:

  • Older people who live alone and find themselves increasingly isolated
  • People with limited mobility who find it difficult to get out and maintain social connections
  • People bereaved or going through difficult times who need friendly, non-judgmental company
  • People with early-stage dementia who benefit from stimulating conversation and activities
  • People recovering from illness who aren’t yet ready to resume their normal social life
  • People new to an area who haven’t yet built local friendships and connections

It’s also for family members who live far away and worry about their loved one being lonely, or who want to ensure their parent or relative has regular, reliable company.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Companionship Care

Our self-employed carers approach companionship naturally and genuinely. Because they work independently and choose who they work with, they develop real friendships with their clients rather than just “doing a job.”

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. This allows real relationships to develop – you get to know each other, share stories and interests, and build genuine friendship over time.

Flexible support: Your carer works directly for you, so you can arrange visits that suit your lifestyle and interests. Whether that’s a couple of hours twice a week for a chat and a walk, a weekly shopping trip, or daily visits – you decide what works for you. There’s no requirement for personal care or medical support unless you want it.

Shared interests: When you browse carer profiles, you can see their interests, hobbies, and personalities. Love gardening? Find a carer who shares that passion. Enjoy cards or Scrabble? Choose someone who’ll give you a good game. This matching based on interests and compatibility creates more meaningful, enjoyable companionship.

Getting out and about: Many of our carers drive and are happy to accompany clients to local places – the garden centre, library, cafe, or just for a scenic drive. This helps you maintain connections to your community and continue enjoying the activities you love.

3. Direct care with support from Sparrow

Your carer works directly for you with no middleman, so you get consistent, truly personalised care.

Cost of Companionship Care

Our carers set their own rates, so fees vary. The following information is simply to give you an idea of typical costs:

Self-employed carers typically charge between £22-25 per hour, with Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee added on top. This means you’ll pay around £24-27.50 per hour for dementia care.

Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Some people use Direct Payments or other local authority funding to pay for companionship care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation needed.

FAQs

Is companionship care just sitting and chatting?
It can be, if that’s what you enjoy! But companionship care can include all sorts of activities – going for walks, playing games, gardening together, going to cafes or shops, doing puzzles, baking, crafts, or helping with hobbies. It’s about doing things you enjoy with friendly company. Many companionship carers also help with light housework or meal preparation alongside spending time together.
Can the same carer visit each time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency is particularly valuable for people with dementia. You arrange visits directly with your carer, so you build a relationship with someone familiar rather than having different carers each time.
Do companionship carers provide personal care?
Some do, some don’t – it varies by individual carer. Many people start with just companionship and later add personal care if needed. When you browse carer profiles or receive a shortlist, you’ll see what each carer offers. If you only need companionship, you can choose carers who focus on that.
Can carers take me out in their car?
Many of our carers drive and are happy to accompany clients on outings in their own car. This is arranged directly between you and your carer, including any contribution toward fuel costs. When you’re looking at carers, you can see who drives and filter for this if it’s important to you.
What if we don't click?
Finding the right companionship match is important. If you meet a carer and don’t feel it’s quite right, there’s no obligation to proceed – we’ll help you find someone else. Most people find a good match within meeting one or two carers, but we want you to be happy with your choice.
Do you cover my area?
We work across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. When you search by postcode or submit an enquiry, we’ll show you which companionship carers operate in your specific area.
