What is Dementia Care?

Dementia care supports people living with dementia to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life for as long as possible. It’s about understanding the person behind the diagnosis – their history, preferences, and what matters to them – and adapting care as their needs change.

Good dementia care isn’t just about helping with practical tasks. It’s about:

● Providing companionship and reducing isolation
● Supporting daily routines and familiar activities
● Helping with personal care sensitively and respectfully
● Creating a calm, reassuring presence
● Communicating effectively and patiently
● Encouraging independence wherever possible
● Supporting family carers who need respite

Who is Dementia Care For?

Dementia care is for anyone living with dementia – whether that’s Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, or another form of dementia.

It can help at any stage:

  • Early stages: Companionship, help with shopping or appointments, prompts with medication, and maintaining social connections.
  • Middle stages: More hands-on support with daily tasks, personal care, meal preparation, and supervision for safety.
  • Later stages: Comprehensive personal care, assistance with eating and drinking, and managing challenging behaviours.

It’s also for family members who need respite, support, or simply peace of mind knowing their loved one is being well cared for.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Dementia Care

Our self-employed carers take a person-centred approach to dementia care. Because they work independently and build direct relationships with clients, they have the time and flexibility to truly get to know the person they’re caring for.

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. This consistency is particularly important for people with dementia, who often feel more comfortable and secure with familiar faces.

Flexible support: Your carer works directly for you, so you can arrange care that fits your needs – whether that’s a few hours of companionship each week, daily visits for personal care, or overnight support. As needs change, you work together to adjust the support provided.

Communication with families: Many of our carers keep families updated and work collaboratively with other professionals involved in care – occupational therapists, district nurses, GPs – to ensure comprehensive support.

Training and experience: Our carers have varying levels of experience with dementia care. Some have worked in dementia specialist settings, others have cared for family members with dementia, and many have completed dementia training.

When you browse carer profiles or submit an enquiry, you can see each carer’s specific experience and qualifications.

Cost of Dementia Care

Our carers set their own rates, so fees vary. The following information is simply to give you an idea of typical costs:

Self-employed carers typically charge between £22-25 per hour, with Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee added on top. This means you’ll pay around £24-27.50 per hour for dementia care.

Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Many people use Direct Payments, Continuing Healthcare funding, or other local authority funding to pay for dementia care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

FAQs

Do your carers have dementia training?
Our carers have varying levels of dementia experience and training. Some have worked in dementia specialist settings, others have completed formal dementia training courses, and many have personal experience caring for family members with dementia. When you browse carer profiles or receive a shortlist, you’ll see each carer’s specific experience and qualifications so you can make an informed choice.
Can the same carer visit each time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency is particularly valuable for people with dementia. You arrange visits directly with your carer, so you build a relationship with someone familiar rather than having different carers each time.
What if my loved one's needs change?
You and your carer can adjust the support as needs change – increasing hours, adding personal care, or changing visit times. If you need more support than one carer can provide, we’ll help you find additional carers to work as a team. There are no contracts or notice periods to worry about.
Can carers help with challenging behaviours?
Many of our carers have experience supporting people whose dementia causes anxiety, confusion, or challenging behaviours. The key is finding a carer with the right experience and approach for your loved one’s specific situation. When you submit an enquiry, let us know about any particular challenges so we can match you with appropriate carers.
Do you cover my area?
We work across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. When you search by postcode or submit an enquiry, we’ll show you which carers with dementia experience operate in your specific area.
Can carers work with other professionals?
Yes. Many of our carers work alongside district nurses, occupational therapists, and other professionals involved in your loved one’s care. They can attend care reviews, share observations, and ensure coordinated support.
