Enabling Care in Northumberland, Tyneside & Cumbria

Independence matters. Sparrow connects you with experienced self-employed carers who provide enabling care – supporting you to do things for yourself rather than doing everything for you. Unlike traditional care agencies, our carers work independently – building direct relationships with their clients and focusing on maintaining and building skills, confidence, and independence.

Whether you’re recovering from illness, managing a long-term condition, or want to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible, our carers are here to support and encourage you rather than take over.

What is Enabling Care?

Enabling care (sometimes called reablement or rehabilitative care) focuses on helping you maintain or regain your independence. Rather than doing tasks for you, your carer supports and encourages you to do things yourself – working at your own pace, building confidence, and maintaining skills.
The approach is “doing with” rather than “doing for.”

Enabling care might involve:

  • Supporting you to wash and dress yourself with prompts and encouragement
  • Helping you prepare meals together rather than cooking for you
  • Accompanying you on walks to maintain mobility and confidence
  • Encouraging you to manage medications with supervision
  • Supporting household tasks you can still manage with help
  • Rebuilding routines and daily living skills after illness or hospital stays
  • Helping you use aids and equipment to remain independent
  • Setting achievable goals and celebrating progress

Who is Enabling Care For?

Enabling care is for anyone who wants to maintain or improve their independence. This might include:

  • People recovering from illness, surgery, or hospital stays who need support to regain confidence and skills
  • People with progressive conditions who want to maintain independence for as long as possible
  • Older people experiencing gradual decline who want to stay active and capable
  • People after a stroke or fall who are rebuilding physical abilities and confidence
  • People with early-stage dementia who benefit from maintaining routines and skills
  • Anyone wanting to avoid becoming dependent on care by staying active and capable

Enabling care is about keeping control over your life, maintaining dignity, and doing things your way with the right support.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Enabling Care

Our self-employed carers take an enabling approach naturally. Because they build relationships with their clients and aren’t rushed, they have time to work at your pace and encourage your independence.

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. This consistency is crucial for enabling care – your carer gets to know your abilities, your goals, and what motivates you. They can track your progress and adjust their approach as you improve or as needs change.

Working at your pace: Your carer works directly for you, so there’s no pressure to rush.

If it takes you twenty minutes to get dressed with encouragement and support, that’s fine – your carer has time. This patient, unhurried approach is essential for building confidence and maintaining skills.

Flexible support: As your abilities change, your support adapts. Perhaps your carer does more initially after a hospital stay, then gradually steps back as you regain confidence. Or they maintain consistent enabling support to prevent decline. You work together to find the right level of help.

Cost of Enabling Care

Our carers set their own rates, so fees vary. The following information is simply to give you an idea of typical costs:

Self-employed carers typically charge between £22-25 per hour, with Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee added on top. This means you’ll pay around £24-27.50 per hour for enabling care.

Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Many people use Direct Payments, reablement funding from the NHS, or other local authority funding to pay for enabling care, particularly after hospital discharge. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

FAQs

How is enabling care different from regular care?
Enabling care focuses on supporting you to do things yourself rather than doing things for you. A regular carer might wash and dress you; an enabling carer encourages and supports you to wash and dress yourself. It takes more time and patience, but helps you maintain independence, dignity, and skills for longer.
What if I can't do something even with support?
Enabling care is about working within your abilities, not forcing you to do things you genuinely can’t manage. Your carer will help you do what you can, and assist with what you can’t. The balance between enabling and doing for you adjusts to your capabilities – if something becomes too difficult, your carer helps more with that task while still encouraging independence in other areas.
Is enabling care only after hospital stays?
No, though it’s often used after illness or hospital discharge to help people regain independence. Enabling care is also valuable for maintaining independence as you age, managing progressive conditions, or simply avoiding becoming unnecessarily dependent on care. The earlier you start an enabling approach, the more effective it tends to be.
Can the same carer visit each time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency is particularly important for enabling care – your carer needs to know your abilities, track your progress, and build a relationship where they can encourage and motivate you effectively.
How long does enabling care last?
It varies. Some people need intensive enabling support for a few weeks after hospital discharge before returning to full independence. Others benefit from ongoing enabling care to maintain skills and prevent decline. You and your carer work together to adjust the support as your needs change – there are no fixed timescales or contracts.
What if I'm not making progress?
Progress isn’t always linear, and some conditions mean maintaining current abilities is itself success. Your carer adapts their approach to what’s realistic for you. If you’re not progressing as hoped, we can help you find additional support or adjust the care plan. The goal is always supporting your independence to the extent that’s possible for you.
