What is Home Care?

Home care is support provided in your own home, allowing you to remain independent in familiar surroundings rather than moving to residential care. It covers a wide range of support – from light-touch companionship and household help through to intensive personal care and specialist support.
Home care can include:

Who is Home Care For?

Home care is for anyone who needs support to continue living independently at home. This might include:

  • Older people who need help with daily tasks but want to remain in their own home
  • People with physical disabilities or long-term health conditions
  • People recovering from illness, surgery, or hospital stays
  • People living with dementia who need support and supervision
  • People who are isolated and would benefit from regular company and practical help
  • Family carers who need support or respite

Home care allows you to stay in your own home – near family, friends, and community – while getting the support you need. For many people, it’s a better alternative to residential care, offering more independence, flexibility, and control over daily life.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Home Care

Our self-employed carers provide home care that’s genuinely personalised. Because they work independently and build direct relationships, the care is centred entirely around you.

Direct relationships: Your carer works directly for you, not for an agency. This means you agree together on what support is provided, when visits happen, and what you’ll pay. There’s no agency in the middle dictating terms or rotating different carers through.

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. You build a genuine relationship with someone who gets to know your preferences, routines, and personality. This consistency improves the quality of care and makes it more enjoyable for everyone.

Flexible support: Because your carer sets their own schedule, there’s flexibility to adapt to your needs. Want visits at specific times? Need to adjust the schedule occasionally? Prefer longer visits less frequently? You work it out together. There are no agency policies about minimum visit times or rigid schedules.

Fair pay, lower costs: Self-employed carers typically earn more than agency carers while charging less than agencies. This is because there’s no agency taking a large cut. You often pay less than agency care while knowing your carer receives fair pay for their work.

Choice and control: You choose your carer based on their experience, personality, and whether you click with them. If your needs change, you work together to adjust the support. You’re in control of your care.

Many carers provide multiple types of care and can adapt as your needs change.

Cost of Home Care

Visiting care: Self-employed carers typically charge £20-25 per hour, plus Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee. This means you’ll pay around £22-27.50 per hour.

Overnight sleep-in care: Typically £120-150 per night, plus Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee

Waking night care: Typically £20-25 per hour, plus Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee
Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Many people use Direct Payments, Continuing Healthcare funding, or other local authority funding to pay for home care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

FAQs

How is Sparrow different from a care agency?
We’re an introductory agency, not a traditional care agency. We connect you with self-employed carers who work directly for you, rather than employing carers ourselves. This means you get consistency (the same carer each time), direct communication, flexibility, and typically lower costs while your carer earns more. We support both you and your carer, but the care relationship is between the two of you.
Can the same carer visit each time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency is particularly valuable for people with dementia. You arrange visits directly with your carer, so you build a relationship with someone familiar rather than having different carers each time.
What if my needs change?
You and your carer can adjust the support as your needs change – increasing hours, adding different types of care, or changing visit times. If you need more support than one carer can provide, we’ll help you find additional carers to work as a team. There are no contracts or notice periods to worry about.
Do your carers have training and experience?
Our carers have varying levels of training and experience – from those who’ve worked in care settings for years to those with personal experience caring for family members. When you browse carer profiles or receive a shortlist, you’ll see each carer’s specific experience, training, and what types of care they provide. We help match you with carers whose experience fits your needs.
How quickly can care start?
Once you’ve chosen your carer and agreed on the support needed, care can often begin within a few days. The exact timing depends on your carer’s availability and how quickly you can arrange things together. Most people are able to start care within a week or two of first contacting us.
Do you cover my area?
We work across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. When you search by postcode or submit an enquiry, we’ll show you which carers operate in your specific area.
