What is Overnight Care?

Overnight care provides support during the night – typically from around 10pm to 7am, though times can be flexible. It’s about ensuring safety, providing reassurance, and giving help when needed through the night hours.

Overnight care can be:
Waking nights: The carer stays awake throughout the night, providing active care – helping with toileting, repositioning, managing wandering, responding to calls, or providing company for someone who’s wakeful or anxious.

Sleep-in care: The carer sleeps in your home (in a separate room) and is available to help if needed during the night – for example, helping someone to the toilet, settling someone who’s confused or anxious, or responding to emergencies.

Support might include:

  • Helping with toileting and continence care through the night
  • Repositioning to prevent pressure sores
  • Managing night-time restlessness or wandering
  • Medication administration
  • Monitoring health conditions
  • Providing reassurance and company for anxiety or confusion
  • Emergency response if needed
  • Morning personal care and getting up routine

Who is Overnight Care For?

Overnight care is for anyone who needs support or supervision through the night. This might include:

  • People with dementia who become confused or wander at night
  • People needing regular repositioning due to limited mobility
  • People requiring frequent toileting assistance through the night
  • People recently discharged from hospital who need monitoring and support
  • People with conditions causing night-time anxiety or breathlessness
  • People in palliative or end-of-life care needing overnight monitoring and comfort

It’s also for family carers who are exhausted from broken sleep and need night-time respite to function during the day.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Overnight Care

Our self-employed carers approach overnight care with professionalism and compassion. Because they work independently and build direct relationships, they provide consistent, reliable night-time support.

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. This is particularly important overnight – your loved one wakes to a familiar face rather than a stranger, reducing confusion and anxiety.

Flexible arrangements: Your carer works directly with you to agree on overnight arrangements – what time they arrive, what support is needed, where they sleep (for sleep-in care), and what the morning routine looks like. You can adjust this as needs change.

Waking or sleep-in: We help you work out which type of overnight care is most appropriate. If your loved one typically sleeps through but might need help once or twice, sleep-in care may be sufficient. If they’re frequently wakeful or need regular attention, waking night care is more appropriate.

Working with day carers: If you have a different carer during the day, overnight carers can coordinate with them to ensure consistent support around the clock. Handover notes and communication between carers help maintain continuity.

Cost of Overnight Care

Sleep-in care (where the carer sleeps and is available if needed): Costs vary due to nature of care and individual carer but typically in the region of £120-150 per night, plus Sparrow’s 10%  introduction fee

Waking night care (where the carer stays awake for most or all of the night): Typically £20-25 per hour (so around £200-250 for a 10-hour night), plus Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee

Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no contracts or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Many people use Direct Payments, Continuing Healthcare funding, or other local authority funding to pay for overnight care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

FAQs

What's the difference between sleep-in and waking night care?

Sleep-in care means the carer sleeps in your home (in a separate room or on a sofa bed) and is available if you need help during the night – for example, helping to the toilet once or twice, or responding if you call out. Waking night care means the carer stays awake throughout the night, providing more active care – perhaps helping with toileting multiple times, managing wandering, or providing company for someone who’s wakeful. We’ll help you work out which is most appropriate for your situation.

Where does the carer sleep?

For sleep-in care, you usually need to provide somewhere for the carer to sleep – this might be a spare bedroom, a sofa bed in the living room, or other suitable sleeping space. This is something you discuss and agree with your carer before they start.

For waking night care, the carer will need somewhere comfortable to sit through the night where they can see or hear if you need them.

Can the same carer come every night?

Most overnight carers don’t work seven nights a week – they typically work a few nights per week to maintain their own health and wellbeing. However, you can arrange regular nights with one carer (say Monday, Wednesday, Friday) and potentially find a second carer for other nights if you need cover every night. This gives you consistency with just two familiar carers.

What if I need help during the day as well?

Some overnight carers also provide daytime care and may be able to work longer shifts. Alternatively, you can arrange day care with one carer and overnight care with another – we can help you find compatible carers who’ll work well together if needed.

Do you cover my area?

We work across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. When you search by postcode or submit an enquiry, we’ll show you which overnight carers operate in your specific area.

What happens in an emergency?

Your overnight carer will call 999 in a medical emergency, just as you or a family member would. They’re there to provide care and reassurance, but they’ll always call for professional medical help if needed. Many carers have first aid training and can respond calmly while waiting for emergency services.
