What is Personal Care

What is Personal Care?

Personal care is hands-on support with the intimate tasks that many of us take for granted – washing, dressing, using the toilet, and moving around safely. It’s about helping people maintain their dignity and independence when physical limitations, illness, or disability make these daily tasks difficult.

Good personal care is provided sensitively and respectfully, at the person’s own pace. It’s about:

  • Supporting personal hygiene – washing, bathing, showering
  • Help with dressing and undressing
  • Assistance with toileting and continence care
  • Support with mobility and transfers
  • Help with eating and drinking if needed
  • Skin care and pressure area management
  • Medication prompts and assistance

Who is Personal Care For?

Personal care is for anyone who needs hands-on support with daily personal tasks. This might include:

  • Older people who find it increasingly difficult to manage washing, dressing, or getting around safely
  • People with physical disabilities who need assistance with personal care tasks
  • People recovering from illness, surgery, or hospital stays who need temporary support while they regain strength
  • People with long-term conditions like arthritis, Parkinson’s, stroke, or MS that affect mobility and independence
  • People with dementia who need prompting and hands-on assistance with personal care
  • It’s also for family members who need respite, or who find providing intimate personal care for a parent or loved one difficult or uncomfortable.

How Sparrow Carers Provide Personal Care

Our self-employed carers approach personal care with sensitivity, respect, and professionalism. Because they work independently and build direct relationships with clients, they have the time to provide unhurried, dignified care.

Consistency matters: Unlike agency care where different carers may visit each time, self-employed carers typically work with the same clients regularly. This consistency is particularly important for personal care – most people feel more comfortable and relaxed with a familiar carer they trust.

Flexible support: Your carer works directly for you, so you can arrange care that fits your needs and preferences – whether that’s morning visits to help you wash and dress, support throughout the day, or both morning and evening care. As your needs change, you work together to adjust the support provided.

Respectful approach: Personal care requires trust. Our carers understand that you’re inviting someone into your home to help with intimate tasks. They work at your pace, respect your privacy and dignity, and adapt their approach to your preferences and comfort level.

Training and experience: Our carers have varying levels of experience with personal care. Many have worked in care settings or provided personal care for family members. When you browse carer profiles or submit an enquiry, you can see each carer’s specific experience and qualifications.

Cost of Personal Care

Our carers set their own rates, so fees vary. The following information is simply to give you an idea of typical costs:

Self-employed carers typically charge between £22-25 per hour, with Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee added on top. This means you’ll pay around £24-27.50 per hour for personal care.

Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.

Many people use Direct Payments, Continuing Healthcare funding, or other local authority funding to pay for personal care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

FAQs

What types of personal care do your carers provide?

Our carers provide a wide range of personal care including help with washing, bathing, showering, dressing, toileting, continence care, mobility support, and assistance with eating and drinking. The specific types of care vary by individual carer – some are comfortable with all aspects of personal care, while others may have preferences. When you browse carer profiles or receive a shortlist, you’ll see what each carer offers.

Can the same carer visit each time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency is particularly valuable for personal care – you build a relationship with someone familiar who understands your needs and preferences, rather than having different carers each time.
What if I feel awkward about needing personal care?

That’s completely normal. Many people feel uncomfortable about needing help with intimate personal tasks. Our carers understand this and approach personal care with sensitivity and professionalism. Meeting potential carers before committing helps you find someone you feel comfortable with. Most people find that once they’ve got used to their carer, the awkwardness fades quickly.

Can carers help with moving and handling?

Many of our carers have experience with moving and handling, including using hoists and other equipment. However, it’s important to match you with a carer who has the right training and experience for your specific mobility needs. When you submit an enquiry, let us know about any equipment or particular moving and handling requirements.

Do you cover my area?

We work across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. When you search by postcode or submit an enquiry, we’ll show you which carers with personal care experience operate in your specific area.

What if my needs change?

You and your carer can adjust the support as your needs change – increasing hours, adding different types of care, or changing visit times. If you need more support than one carer can provide, we’ll help you find additional carers to work as a team. There are no contracts or notice periods to worry about.
