I came into care work by accident about 10 years ago when both my parents-in-law became seriously ill. Health professionals suggested I’d be good at it, but I dismissed the idea – my only experience of professional care was agencies sending different carers for rushed visits. Then I began caring for a neighbour with dementia. As his needs increased, I introduced him to a dementia charity Chrysalis Club, who offered me a job. Through them, I later cared for a lady via direct payments, providing personalised support in her own home. That’s when I discovered Sparrow Carers and realised self-employed caring could offer the quality and continuity I’d given my family.
As the eldest of five with three sons, I understand family care. I bring that same approach to my clients: not just completing tasks, but providing emotional support and helping maintain independence. I support clients with whatever they most need help with including companionship, shopping, personal care, medication support, social visits, help with dressing/bedtime, meal preparation.
