One of the best things about working with a self-employed carer is that you get to choose the carer or carers you work with, guaranteeing a familiar face and consistent care. With a Sparrow carer, you also benefit from access to our growing network of 35+ carefully selected, self-employed carers across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria.
This network exists in the background to offer support when you need it. Here’s how it can help.
1. Cover for holidays and sickness
One of the main concerns people have about working with a self-employed carer is what happens if they become unwell or when they go on holiday.
This is a valid concern. For clients where guaranteed cover is absolutely essential, self-employed care may not be the right way to arrange care. A traditional agency with a large pool of employed staff who can be deployed on rotas might be more appropriate in those situations.
But for many of the clients we work with, where self-employed care is the right fit for their circumstances, it can offer real peace of mind to know they’re connected to a network of high-quality carers who may be able to help when needed.
If your regular carer is unavailable, we’ll do our best to help you find cover from other Sparrow carers. We can’t guarantee we’ll always be able to find someone. We’re not working with employed carers who are expected to take whatever work they’re given – our network works on goodwill and mutually beneficial support. Finding cover depends on your location, carer availability, and your specific care needs – but we’re often able to help people find the cover they need.
Importantly, this isn’t like a traditional care agency. You still get to choose who provides cover. We don’t just send whoever’s available on a rota. Instead, we can introduce you to potential cover carers, and you decide whether you’re comfortable with them visiting. This means you have more options while still maintaining control over who comes into your home, even when your regular carer isn’t available.
You’re in control of how this works:
- You can ask your carer to arrange cover with another carer they know and trust
- You can ask your carer to cast the net wider by posting a cover request in our online carer community
- You can contact Sparrow and we’ll reach out to our network on your behalf
Whatever works best for you.
2. Additional or alternative care when needs change
Care needs often change over time. Perhaps you need more hours of support, or different types of help, or you’ve reached a point where you need two carers for some visits.
Our network gives you flexibility when this happens. We can help you find:
Additional carers if your needs increase beyond what your current carer can provide. You might keep your existing carer for some visits and add another carer for additional support.
Different types of support if your care needs change. For example, if you develop a condition requiring more specialized care, we can introduce you to carers with relevant experience.
Two-person care for situations requiring manual handling or other tasks that need two carers working together. Some of our carers work in partnerships specifically for this, and being part of our network makes these arrangements possible.
3. Peer support and shared learning
Behind the scenes, our network of carers support each other in ways that directly benefit you. Carers share knowledge, signpost useful resources, and offer guidance when facing new situations. This reduces the isolation that can come with being self-employed, and means your carer has access to the collective experience and learning of 35+ other experienced carers – making them more effective at what they do.
4. Continuity when long-term circumstances change
Sometimes circumstances change in ways that mean your regular carer can no longer continue. They might move away, retire, or their personal situation might change.
When this happens, being connected to Sparrow’s network means you don’t have to start from scratch. You’re already part of our community, and we’ll do our best to introduce you to other carers who might be a good match. The transition is smoother because:
- We already understand your needs and preferences
- We know which carers in our network might suit you
- You’re working with people who meet the same standards as your previous carer
- Your outgoing carer might even be able to introduce you to potential replacements and help with the handover
While we hope you’ll have a long, stable relationship with your chosen carer, it’s reassuring to know there’s continuity available if circumstances change.
The key point: it’s there when you need it
The beauty of our network is that it’s there in the background, ready to support you when circumstances require it, but it doesn’t interfere with your day-to-day relationship with your carer.
You still have one consistent person visiting you – the same familiar face who knows your routines, understands your preferences, and has built a relationship with you. That doesn’t change.
But when life happens – when your carer needs a holiday, when your needs change, or when unexpected situations arise – you’re not on your own. You have access to a network of other carefully selected carers who will do their best to step in to help if they can.
