Self-employed carers typically charge between £22-25 per hour, with Sparrow’s 10% introduction fee added on top. This means you’ll pay around £24-27.50 per hour for respite care.
Because your carer works directly for you rather than through an agency, you often pay less than traditional agency care while your carer earns more. There are no minimum visit times, contracts, or hidden fees – just transparent, flexible care that works for you.
Many people use Direct Payments, Carers Breaks funding, or other local authority funding to pay for respite care. The direct relationship with a self-employed carer works well with most funding arrangements, and we can provide any documentation your local authority needs.

How much notice do I need to give?
This varies by carer and situation. For regular planned respite (like weekly visits), most carers can start within a week or two. For one-off respite like holiday cover, it’s best to plan ahead where possible – a few weeks’ notice gives you more choice of carers. Some carers can accommodate emergency requests with just a day or two notice, though availability may be limited.
Can the same carer provide respite every time?
Yes. Because our carers are self-employed and work directly for their clients, they typically work with the same people regularly. This consistency means your loved one gets comfortable with their respite carer, and you can relax knowing exactly who’s providing care. You arrange visits directly with your carer according to their availability.
What if my loved one doesn't want respite care?
This is common. Many people resist the idea of “strangers” coming in.
