If you’re working in care – or thinking about it – you’ve probably heard about self-employed caring. More carers are choosing to work independently, setting their own schedules, choosing their own clients, and earning significantly more than traditional agency wages. But what does it actually mean to be a self-employed carer, and is it right for you? This post gives you the highlights to help you decide if it’s worth exploring further.
What does self-employed caring mean?
As a self-employed carer, you run your own care business. You choose which clients you want to work with, set your own rates (typically £20-25 per hour), and agree the care arrangements directly with them. You’re responsible for the care you provide, and you have the freedom to build your work around your life rather than fitting your life around agency rotas.
Many self-employed carers work with an introductory agency like Sparrow. We connect you with potential clients in your area, handle the vetting and admin support, and provide a network of other carers for backup and community. You stay completely self-employed – we’re not your employer – but you get professional support without the agency taking half your earnings.
Key benefits at a glance
Earn what you’re worth
Self-employed carers typically earn £20-25 per hour compared to agency carers who often earn minimum wage or close to it. You keep the vast majority of what clients pay, rather than the agency taking 50% or more of the fee.
Choose your clients and build real relationships
You decide who you work with. You meet potential clients before taking them on, and you provide all their care yourself rather than being part of a rota. This means you can build genuine, ongoing relationships with the people you care for.
Control your schedule
You set your own availability and agree working hours directly with your clients. Need Thursdays off? Only want to work mornings? Prefer longer visits rather than rushing between multiple short calls? You make those choices.
Get proper support without losing your independence
At Sparrow, we provide DBS checks, insurance reimbursement, invoicing systems, care agreement templates, training access, and accountancy support – all free for carers. We also give you access to a community of other Sparrow carers for advice, peer support, and cover when you need it. You get the benefits of working with an organization without giving up your independence.
Is it right for you?
Self-employed caring works particularly well if you:
- Want to take responsibility for your own work and build direct relationships with clients
- Value being fairly paid for skilled, caring work
- Are looking for regular, ongoing work (rather than occasional shifts)
- Like the idea of running your own business with support and training
It might not be the best fit if you:
- Need guaranteed hours and income immediately
- Prefer someone else to tell you when to work and what to do
- Only want to do caring work for a short time
- Aren’t comfortable with technology (you’ll need a smartphone and to respond to emails/messages)
Being a self-employed carer isn’t for everyone, and that’s absolutely fine. It requires commitment, responsibility, and a genuine motivation to provide excellent care. But for the right people, it offers freedom, fair pay, and the chance to care in the way you know works best.
Are you right for Sparrow?
Even if self-employed care sounds perfect, you’ll want to make sure Sparrow is a good fit. Here’s what we’re looking for:
Location: We work with carers in Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. If you’re outside this area, we won’t be able to support you (unless you’re nearby and we really click – we have been known to stretch our boundaries a little!).
Availability: We’re looking for carers who want at least 15+ hours of work per week. Self-employed care works best when you can build regular, ongoing relationships with clients.
The right qualities: We look for carers who are caring (genuinely motivated by helping others), communicative (responsive, proactive, and easy to talk to), and competent (self-reliant and able to trust your own judgement). If this sounds like you, you’re probably in the right place.
Able to drive: Having a UK driving license and access to a car makes it much easier to reach clients, especially in our more rural areas. It’s not an absolute requirement, but it does open up far more opportunities.
Long-term interest: We’re looking for people who want to build something lasting, not just try caring for a few months. We invest a lot in helping new carers get set up, so we hope you’re interested in the long term. That said, there are no contracts or commitments – you’re always free to leave if circumstances change.
What about experience?
You might be wondering if you need formal care experience to work with Sparrow. The short answer is: it helps, but it’s not essential.
We care more about who you are than what’s on your CV. We’ve worked with experienced nurses and long-time professional carers, but we’ve also worked with people who have no paid care experience at all. What matters is that you’re kind, reliable, genuinely motivated to provide exceptional care, and have the qualities our clients are looking for.
If you’re completely new to care and haven’t supported anyone in your personal life either, we might encourage you to gain some experience with an agency first or take a relevant qualification. But if you’re caring, competent, and communicative, we’d love to hear from you – whatever your background.
What Sparrow offers
Sparrow is an introductory agency based in Hexham, supporting self-employed carers across Northumberland, Tyneside, and North Eastern Cumbria. We only work with carers we’d trust with our own family members, and we’re looking for people who are caring, communicative, and competent.
We charge clients just 10% (the lowest fee we’ve found – others charge 12-27%) and we don’t charge carers anything at all. We provide comprehensive support to help you succeed as a self-employed carer while you keep your independence and earn what you’re worth.
